The battles for Donetsk Airport were among the fiercest in the war in eastern Ukraine during the ATO period, lasting from May 2014 to January 20, 2015. For over 242 days, Ukrainian soldiers, volunteers, medics, and volunteers stood firm against the invasion of Russian-occupying forces and pro-Russian militants, fiercely defending their homeland.

In September 2014, heavy fighting began at the airport. Despite the Minsk agreements, the enemy intensified combat actions. The village of Pisky became a stronghold for ATO forces, providing provisions and ammunition to the airport defenders and facilitating rotations. Artillery support was also deployed in this village.

The second attempt by the enemy to take control of the Donetsk Airport occurred on May 26. Russian military units and militants entered the new terminal. However, coordinated actions by aviation and ground forces drove the enemy from their positions, and the airfield came under ATO control.

In March 2014, against the backdrop of the Russian Federation's occupation of the Crimean Peninsula and the aggressor's fostering of separatism in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, servicemen from the 3rd Separate Special Purpose Regiment and the 95th Separate Airmobile Brigade took over the security of Donetsk Airport. On April 17, 2014, the occupiers first unsuccessfully attempted to capture the airport, and on May 6, all flights through the airfield ceased.

On May 26, 2014, the first battle between Ukrainian military forces and pro-Russian armed groups took place to establish control over Donetsk International Airport. The Russian assault groups were forced to retreat and suffered heavy casualties. After the battle on May 26, the militants did not attempt any assaults for several months, but in the autumn of 2014, the fighting resumed on a much larger scale in the battles for Donetsk Airport.

During the battles, the Ukrainian army built a defense line, creating fortifications around the runway perimeter in the surrounding villages of Pisky, Vodiane, Opytne, and near the ventilation shaft of the Butivka mine. The battles for Donetsk Airport became a symbol of the resilience and fighting spirit of the Ukrainian army, and the defenders of the terminals earned the nickname «Cyborgs».
