FOREWORD

This manual provides doctrinal guidance for the conduct of combat operations by infantry platoons and squads. It also addresses non-combat operations of infantry platoons and squads within the context of conflict. Thematic discussions include principles, tactics, methods, procedures, terms, and symbols used in the operations of small units in the contemporary operational environment (COE). FM 3-21.8 replaces FM 7-8, Infantry Platoon and Squad dated April 22, 1992 (with Change 1 dated March 1, 2001). It is not intended to be a standalone publication. To fully understand the operations of infantry platoons and squads, commanders must understand FM 3-21.10, Infantry Company, and FM 3-21.20 (FM 7-20), Infantry Battalion. The primary audience for this manual is infantry commanders, platoon sergeants, squad leaders, and fire support group leaders. The secondary audience includes instructors at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), authors of infantry training literature, other infantry commanders, staff officers, and military academy instructors.
