Avdiivka - a city located 6 kilometers from Donetsk. Pro-Russian militants controlled it from late April 2014 until it was liberated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on July 28, 2014. Until January 21, 2015, the militants' attention was focused on Donetsk airport, but after its destruction, attacks began on the outskirts of Avdiivka - the dacha sector, the ventilation shaft of the Butivka-Donetsk mine, and the industrial zone on the southern outskirts of the city. The fighting for the industrial zone peaked in the spring of 2016, after which the Ukrainian army gradually pushed the terrorists south to the highway. At the end of January 2017, Ukrainian forces approached the highway and the Yasinuvata interchange, taking it under fire control.

Fighting for Avdiivka flared up again on February 21, 2022. From the first day of the full-scale Russian invasion, Avdiivka became one of the first cities to face constant assaults from the Russian army. Despite all the difficulties, Ukrainian fighters continue to inflict losses on the occupying forces in manpower and equipment, exhausting the enemy along the entire front line. After a month of assaults, Russia has lost more than 10,000 troops, hundreds of armored vehicles, and artillery systems.
